MTU Aero Engines AG air conditioning and heating

The assignment was the assembly of a complete air conditioning system, connection of a boiler room and plumbing, including installing the Victaulic system. The assembly took place in the production premises of MTU Aero Engines AG, where components for military and commercial modules are made.

Customer profile

Caverion Deutschland GmbH operates all technical crafts, even in the most demanding environments. These are often clean rooms, closely guarded laboratories or complex construction projects such as convention centres, airports, universities or hospitals.

Execution

Construction preparation
Our assemblers brought all the necessary tools and installed lights as the entire construction started at the bottom of the basement. They delivered the prepared material and components – DN 15-400 pipes, air conditioning units, pumps and more.

Course of execution
First, brackets (Hilti system) were installed to fix the pipes. This was followed by installing a concrete slab and rubber to prevent vibrations under the pumps. Measurement of pipeline levels and placement air conditioning units began. Our employees connected the pumps both in the basement and on the roof. After measuring the levels, they began to weld the necessary pipes in vices and on workbenches and then mounted and welded them to the positions in the designated location. After spot welding and mounting in the appropriate positions, it was the time to weld the position welds, using mirror welding.

The next procedure included installing valves, pressure gauges, thermometers and dirt traps. Our employees fitted expansion tanks and a water tank with a 10,000 litre’ volume. After installing the expansion tanks, they installed radiators and the corresponding pipes of the Prees system. Finally, our trained staff installed the Victaulic pipes and therefore prepared the contract for handover.

Complications
A problem occurred when assembling the brackets, when we discovered that they had been moved, contrary to the drawings. We immediately started repairing the brackets, but it resulted in a delay in relation to the original schedule. We made up for this delay during the assembly and the contract was completed in accordance with the original schedule.

Inspection mechanisms
We carried out visual inspections of welds and pressure tests during the assembly of the pipes. Pressure tests are always carried out at stages when the pipe is closed on one side, pressurized to 3 bar on the other side and we wait for the pressure to drop. This reveals pores and leaks in welds, which are common in large implementations.

Result

The customer was satisfied with the quality and the professional and precise approach, resulting in long-term cooperation.
